Tile vs. Solid Surface: The REAL Cost of Ownership
Compare two of the leading material options for your next project, and discover the real cost of ownership.
Tower Industries recently partnered with Sterling Surfaces and famed architect Ole Sheeren to custom design a unique wraparound countertop display for the retail boutique Dean & DeLuca. This first-of-itskind project features an undulating topographical countertop made with Meridian Solid Surface. The project was part of a theatrical platform titled “Stage” to present Dean & DeLuca’s new chef-led fast food concept, and was first displayed at Design Miami 2016 in December.
We’ve always known our solid surface shower bases were strong, but we wanted to be more specific in our conversations and our marketing. So, we shipped one of our Meridian Solid Surface shower bases to Home Innovation Research Labs to test its load capacity. This is a process for measuring how much weight a shower base can withstand without cracking. The goal was to add weight (or load) to our shower bases and “test it to failure,” intending to push until the base met its breaking point.
In Late 2013, The Norton Women’s Kosair Children’s Hospital – part of the Norton
Health Care System – was interested in a major expansion; one that would nearly
double its size. The architect on the project contacted Tower Industries looking for a shower base solution that did not require depressing the slab in order to provide a barrier-free threshold to its patient room showers. They were adamant about performing the renovations without having to remove part of the floor surface in order to get the zero clearance threshold.
A Tower Story: Residence Hall Shower Retrofit
As one of the largest and most highly respected universities in the country, The Ohio State University takes pride in everything it does, including the residential facilities provided for its students. Like many other institutions, OSU was dealing with inevitable aging of the shower materials used in many of its residence halls. This aging had caused terrazzo shower bases and ceramic tile shower walls to crack and even crumble apart in many areas.
